It may or may not be interesting to you.
Some of these domains personal, will hold on to unless my name changes, which I hope I won’t have to do. Generic, will either be used in one of my main side projects or will be sold at a later date.

Please note this is taken from my latest status update on my Facebook account.

Vincent Lee: Finally cleared my wall on my profile. Had to go one by one deleting each entry. Will delete my account within the next 24 hours.

Tunan Pan: why are you deleting your account? And why did you have to clear all the posts if you are gonna delete it? :S

Vincent Lee: I just don’t like the way Facebook has been operating over the past few months and has been getting accumulatively worse with the way its handled personal data. Such as tracking every single click and keystroke while we are on this site. As well as the occasional security leaks of private chat conversations being made public. And by staying on here, I feel like I’m passively endorsing them.

Here are some webpages that explain it fully:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/15/delete-facebook-account-q_n_576956.html
http://gizmodo.com/5534736/more-reasons-why-you-should-still-quit-facebook
http://facebookprotest.com/

However saying that, I am a geek and feel it’s important for me to have a presence here which is why I’m only going to have a page (originally known as fan page) to only post status updates. And show other contact details (MSN, Skype etc.)
Link: http://facebook.com/officialvincentlee

And no, I didn’t have to clear all my posts on my wall but felt natural to do so (not leaving a trace of info - even though they probably have it backed up in their cache haha) just like removing my profile details and photos.

Tunan Pan: ahh I see, I thought it might have something to do with that, another friend of mine was talking about the whole privacy thing too. It’s good that you’re doing this :]

Vincent Lee: Yeah thanks. It might seem a bit contradictory with deleting my Facebook page but keeping a fan page however it changes the way I used Facebook so that everything I post I know is fully public (I think of it as my twitter feed but in a location with friends).

I feel as though most people on Facebook are blatantly unaware of these privacy concerns and don’t even touch the the privacy settings for their account. The default settings makes most of your profile information public which is something most people didn’t sign up for when we joined Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg (who is only 26) has been quoted saying he “doesn’t believe in privacy“ to support Facebook’s business model where their money comes from advertisers advertising to certain demographics (which is why information has been defaulted to public).

Apart from the “blatant unawareness” of Facebook users, the only thing from stopping us from moving on is that we have no alternative at the moment. Which is why so much support has been put behind Diaspora (a software to be built by NYU students to be an alternative to Facebook where users can fully control the information they share. http://joindiaspora.com/) with over $100,000 raised to help launch it. However it’ll be a few months before we see what this powerful vision can produce.

I don’t know about other people but I think a lot, and often get lost in my thoughts. Hours and hours of essay writing time can be filled with thinking. Thinking about? Glad you asked. Not meaning to sound egotistical here but 99% of the time I’m thinking about myself, stuff that affects me and my relative position to other things. Now my view on this: I live, grow, speak, motion and think through this body and there is a whole lot of think about that involved me (not saying everything is about me, I’m saying everyone has an involvement in almost everything).

A lot of what I think about involves one of two things.

1. Myself in relation to others. And how they perceive me. Now I know, I know, you should “not worry over how people see you” but I do. And I do a lot. And I can’t help it.

2. How I can use myself to create something. Now this is quite broad. I always have ideas floating around in my head, always (which is maybe why I find it incredibly challenging to sleep sometimes). They are usually about 3 things:

Efficiency (perhaps the way Henry Ford thought): “a great new way for people to be more efficient online”, “simplifying certain ways we do things”. All about automation, aggregation and method.

Something new: Finding that niche market that hasn’t been tapped into yet (or has been tapped into but hasn’t done it right - relating back to efficiency). Examples of this? There’s a website I came across about 4-5 months ago called manpacks.com which sells socks, t-shirts and undies by subscription. So I thought it was a fantastic idea (especially since I was working in mens fashion retail for nearly 2 years and seen the number of wives who would come in for their husbands to buy these items) and tweeted it out to followers. Thought, why not create a New Zealand version of this? Oh 2 days ago, Dan from The Apprentice NZ launched mansupplies.co.nz. Damn. Another idea I’m more and more thinking about is Recommendations. For example, say you wanted to buy a blender today, or you wanted to listen to some new music, or you wanted to hear news that you’d be interested in. Now is there something that would know so much about you, it could recommend this type of stuff to you? I think we need a service that tailors results to your needs (and bringing a social aspect to this could make it engaging).

Me: As much as a huge consumer of media I am, I’m always thinking of different ways to “create”. Which is where my inspiration of video blogging came from (my channel) but I have the desire to write (a book?), talk (on a podcast?) direct (a film/play), create (music, a cartoon, a business, a community, a way to help). What’s up with me wanting to create? Is it that I have too many influences? Is it that I want to get my name out there? Is it that I want to leave a mark of where I once was?

Ultimately I want to create an “life” archive that will

Past: Archive it and present it in an orderly manner for easy viewing.

Present: A clear view of what I am currently up to. My latest videos/photos/tweets/thoughts.

Future: List of goals which I am working up to, or aiming to reach some day.

This (vincentlee.co.nz and maybe someday vincentlee.com or vincent.com) will be my archive (WIP) and will continue to be my archive. Now I don’t know why you are still reading this… Hmm. Basically been rambling to myself about the way I think and what I mainly think about. I may post a follow-up to this later on, expanding on “Myself in relation to others”. But until my next article, thanks for reading and feel free to subscribe for updates like these by filling in the “Subscribe for Updates” form in the right-hand column on this page.

Comments:

Patrick:

wow vincent you have so many great ideas and your soo driven hahahaha!

oh oh oh i have an idea: To have a comedy/talk show called ‘Your such a character’, I would host it and it would show things like what i got up to in the week, celebrity news, etc, and i’m tryna think of something like acting as a character, lol don’t steal my idea!
